Yes — in fact it’s ideal. The 20 lesson chapters start with how to place a stone. A character teacher walks you through it, and you learn by playing rather than just reading. AI difficulty starts at 25 kyu, so your first game won’t be daunting.

It runs on the Go engine KataGo. With 31 levels graded from 25 kyu to 9 dan , beginners get an opponent that goes easy while dan players get a real fight.

It will be free to download at launch, and AI matches in the kyu range (25 kyu–1 kyu), life-and-death problems and lessons are free to use.

AI matches in the dan range and some convenience features are premium, and the game contains other in-app purchases.

These are 580 problems hand-picked from classic Go literature, with every answer verified by the engine. They are split into five grades so you can work up at your own level.

Android and iOS phones and tablets are supported. The game is currently preparing for launch, and at launch you will be able to download it from Google Play, the App Store and ONE store as Baduk I Joa. It is optimised for landscape, and you can switch to portrait during a game.

Once your rank and training progress meet the conditions, your character’s style evolves. Their appearance changes from apprentice to full player to master, and perks such as gold earnings rise with them. Your skill is their growth.
